"Power Players" — The Daily Breeze, June 16, 2003
A paper chart tacked to an empty wall at Fourman Industries, Inc. lists the names of dozens of familiar businesses, such as Sea World, NBC, and Fox.
They all share a problem that Pat Condon believes he can solve: power cord woes. He helps them sort out the tangles and confusion, and deter theft and wear and tear.
As president and owner of Fourman, a customized power cord supply and printing company in Torrance, the 46-year-old Condon and his three employees fill a unique niche.
The Torrance resident, who started the company in 1997 as a construction supply business grow especially since focusing on customized power cords.
Condon then hired Gerhard Leodolter, 42, of Rancho Palos Verdes, as Director of Marketing.
On the wall above Leodolter’s desk, hand coiled multi-colored power cords. Ranging from standard white and yellow to blue, neon-green, hot-pink, and dark red, each can be emblazoned with a customized message thanks to an automated printing system developed for Fourman.
Nick Parsons, 33 of Redondo Beach, operated the printing machine. On busy days, he sometimes prints more than 100 separate power cords with corporate labels or other messages.
With the arrival of Leodolter, who has a background in sales & marketing management for the food industry, Fourman is extending its reach from contractors to major corporations.
The company, which sells most of its power cords out of state and has a base of about 2,000 contractors, supplies cords to Caesar’s Palace and the Flamingo Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
Fourman’s largest order thus far came from Todd Shipyards in Seattle. It ordered 20,000 feet of pink cords because, as Condon said, “it’s pretty hard to walk off with them without being noticed.
Although much of their past business has been solicited through direct-mail and sales calls, Leodolter and Condon hope to pique the interests of resorts, amusement parks, casinos, film studios, and other big businesses that need to keep their many power cords separate and out of the hands of thieves.
They also hope to do more business with contractors and consumers in the South Bay.
“Most local businesses buy power cords at Home Depot,” Leodolter said. “We have a colorful and customized alternative produced locally, that costs less than what they are paying.” And this, they would argue, is the key to their power.
